Antique Qing-Style Red & Gilt Chinese Lattice Panel — Three Ruyi Medallions
A screen fragment that reads like architecture on the wall: a field of interlocking lattice bordered in red, punctuated by three gilt cartouches in the ruyi (wish-granting) shape. It’s all the reasons we love old Chinese joinery—geometry, symbolism, and hand-cut wood—now scaled for modern interiors. Hang over a console, float it above a sofa, or set it as the “one big piece” on a long wall. Age crack present (see photos); stable as displayed and priced with condition in mind.

A decorative survivor from a traditional Chinese interior: carved latticework framed in red, set with three gilt ruyi-shaped cartouches. Red and gold were chosen for a reason—auspicious color and imperial gleam—so even as a fragment this panel carries cultural symbolism and graphic punch. Condition is decorative-good with a noticeable age crack across the medallions, scattered gilt/lacquer wear, and small touch-ups—exactly the patina people hunt for. Ready to hang; we recommend two D-rings or a French cleat for even support.

Brand / Pattern Background

Traditional Chinese windows used wooden lattice grilles—often painted red and sometimes gilded—originally backed with paper so the pattern’s shadow became the “view.” Motifs weren’t random: the cloud-shaped ruyi (as-you-wish) design promised good fortune, while red and gold signaled happiness and wealth. Panels like this migrated from houses and halls to the gallery wall, bringing centuries of joinery and symbolism with them.
